Neurocognitive Training

Paraclete Counseling Center is pleased to offer neurocognitive training to improve attention and executive functioning (EF) skills. We offer neurocognitive training using Play Attention, a patented computer-based program that utilizes NASA-inspired neurotechnology.

Play Attention uses the BodyWave® Armband that measures brainwaves through the skin, as opposed to traditional neurofeedback that requires head and scalp sensors attached to the participant. The key to this unique technology is that it provides immediate and continuous feedback to help you create new neural pathways. All the cognitive exercises are completely controlled by your mind.

This advanced neurotechnology is based on neuroplasticity - the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural pathways. When humans focus their attention enough, they can slowly rewire these pathways. The brain can rewire to function in a different way than how it previously functioned.

Play Attention is backed by research conducted by Tufts University School of Medicine in the Boston Public School System. Tufts University performed three randomized controlled studies of Play Attention and the results were published in peer-reviewed journals. Out of three groups, one used Play Attention, one was given brain games, and the third had no intervention. The Play Attention group improved significantly in executive functioning, attention, social and behavioral control. They had no significant increase in medication. The brain games group and the control group showed no increase in attention or executive functioning and had an average increase of 9 mg of medication. Six months later, the researchers went back to see if students retained their gains and found that students had retained significant results.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Children and adults can play video games for hours. This is because these games have fast moving high resolution graphics and sound effects that stimulate the reward center of the brain. Even kids and adults with ADHD can focus on these games. Play Attention is a computer-based program that utilizes “boring,” non-stimulating computer graphics that simulates mundane or monotonous situations, like listening in class or doing homework. These game-like cognitive exercises are controlled by attention alone. In other words, the brain acts as a controller. The immediate feedback in real time allows the participant to know if they are paying attention, and if not, we immediately let you know so you can self-monitor and then self-correct.

  • Yes! Play Attention technology was originally used to train NASA astronauts. This technology was then used to create the BodyWave® armband. Out of the three randomized controlled studies by Tufts University School of Medicine, students who were part of the Play Attention group had global improvements in academic, social and behavioral functioning as well as improvements in executive functioning.

  • Yes! Both ADHD children and adults can benefit. Cognitive benefits have even been reported by senior citizens who were trying to improve their cognitive skills. Although no studies have been completed on adults with long-haul COVID who have memory issues, we believe this neurocognitive training could benefit these adults as well.

  • Research indicates that the minimum amount of time that provides lasting benefits is two 30-minute sessions per week for a total of approximately 40 hours. After 40 weeks, participants will have lasting brain changes with long-term benefits. It is recommended that participants use it for one hour a week, divided into two 30-minute sessions, but this can vary with each person as some people require more training while others require less. Many people will begin to see results in about six weeks of consistent training.

    • increased attention

    • greater time on tasks

    • less impulsivity

    • better academic/work performance

    • improved social interactions

    • improved productivity and executive functioning

  • You may either come to our office and use our BodyWave® Armband and software without renting or purchasing the armband. Another option is to purchase the BodyWave® Armband directly from Play Attention to use in the comfort of your home. You would still pay Paraclete for the initial assessment and customized weekly sessions. We will have a limited supply of armbands for lease.

We will design a customized program for each participant and then the AI in the Play Attention program will set each session curriculum and goals for each cognitive exercise, monitor progress and manage rewards. As part of the Play Attention program, we offer the Academic Bridge in which participants can perform tasks such as homework or studying while wearing the BodyWave® Armband to transfer skills to real-life situations.
